2002 Trail Highlights
We receive MDT notice-to-proceed with consultant selection process for the design of the Giant Springs Road Trail Tunnel project.

City contract with Neil Consultants to design portions of the Black Eagle Trail is negotiated and sent to MDT for signature.

City Engineering Department moves forward on design for the East approach ramps and sidewalk widening associated with completing the Weissman Trail Bridge.

Agreements between the City and MDT will include new trail segments and a trail tunnel be designed by Wells Engineering (Omaha) in conjunction with the BNRR bridge replacement project which includes widening River Drive South and a re-aligned intersection with Lower River Road. The project is scheduled for construction in 2004.

Plaques are ordered for 12 memorial benches that will be installed along the trail over the next several months.

RTI hires Neil Consultants environmental division to develop a DEQ-approved sampling plan and conduct field work and final report on environmental conditions along the former railroad line in Black Eagle that is the preferred alignment for the trail between 10th St. and the East end of Higgins Park.

RTI orders 5 recycled plastic composite benches for the Weissman Bridge and 3 more of the benches and 2 tables for the new composite deck at the Train Exhibit trailhead.

City signs Contractor Agreement with AAA Construction for asphalt patching and overlay work on the trail between the River Drive crossing near the Girl Scout Cabin to 7th Street. Work is to be done in July.

A Montana Conservation Corps crew built two new trail shelter structures and one new trail information kiosk. Fortunately this scheduled project was completed inside the Park & Recreation Department shop since it was below zero outside during the 4 days of construction. The MCC crew were led by RTI volunteer Charlie Rice. One shelter (materials/labor) was donated In Memory of Yvonne Peace and will be installed later this spring over an existing table on the south side trail just below Black Eagle Falls. The second shelter is donated by Gary Fosse State Farm Insurance and will be installed over a new table and pad to be located along the new segment of trail planned along the north side of Black Eagle Reservoir between North River Road and the headrace of the dam. The information kiosk is funded by the Cascade County Conservation District and will be placed at the entry of the new Crooked Falls Managed Natural Area along the North Shore Trail overlooking Cochrane Reservoir. We look forward to working with MCC on several projects later this year.
